Of course, you should always make sure you have a parent's or guardian's permission and they should always know where you're going, especially if your job involves going into other people's houses, but also if you're looking at online jobs for 13 year olds – just so they know what you're doing and can double check it's legit.
But assuming you're taking these basic precautions, you'll easily be able to find a bunch of different ways to make money that work around your school, extracurricular and social commitments.
How to make money as a 13 year old
When asking how could a 13 year old make money, the answer is: plenty of ways! The key here is to rely on your skills.
For example, if you have a creative streak, you can definitely use that to make some cash. Alternatively, maybe you have a way with words, meaning selling things should be pretty easy for you.
Either way, there's definitely going to be something on this list for you.
1. Do surveys
Doing surveys is a really easy way to make money as a 13 year old. This is because it doesn't take long to finish one, you can easily do it through your phone (or computer, if you don't have a phone yet)…and who doesn't love giving their opinions!
It's true that there are a lot of survey sites out there that don't pay much, so aren't really worth considering. This is why you should limit yourself to doing surveys through sites that you know are legit in terms of how much they pay.
And better yet, they'll even give you a completely free welcome bonus just for signing up!
Our top picks for the survey sites where you can actually make money include:
- Swagbucks (which gives you a $5 welcome bonus just for signing up)
- InboxDollars (includes a $5 sign up bonus when you verify your email address)
- MyPoints
2. Play games
Playing games is one of those great ways for a 13 year old to make money fast, as it's probably something that you're doing already. Whether you already have a phone or do it on your computer, wasting time on your device of choice by using PayPal games that pay real money is something all of us do – so why not do the same thing and get some extra cash?
Specifically, I just mentioned Swagbucks for the fact you can use it to make money from surveys. However, in addition to surveys, it's also a free app that will pay you to play games. Better yet, you only have to be 13 years old to use it.
And not to mention that you get a free $5 welcome bonus just for signing up!
Swagbucks
Free sign-up bonus: $5
A great app for making extra money, including withcash back from online shopping, watching videos, playing games and more.
And givenit's paid out over $550 million through Amazon, Paypal and other gift cards, it's 100% legit.
3. Watch videos
Swagbucks will also pay you simply to watch videos as a way to make money at 13! And don't worry, you won't be stuck just watching ads.
In fact, you'll get to see a bunch of different types of videos doing this – and the money you'll get from doing this isn't bad either!
Get started with getting paid to watch videos on Swagbucks here.
4. Search the web
…and yet another way that you can make money through Swagbucks is simply by searching the web.
The object here is for them to get information on people's browsing habits, but rest assured that the information they get is completely anonymous. This means that as you'd be searching the internet anyway, whether it's for school for your own random purposes, you can make money from this with zero extra effort.
Sign up here for Swagbucks to get started – and to grab that amazing free $5 welcome bonus.
5. Start a blog
Starting a blog can easily be one of the highest paying online jobs, no matter your age. Just asked Tavi Gevinson, who started her Style Rookie blog when she was only 11. By the time she turned 15, she was making millions from it.
It's also super cheap to start your own site – although you'll need to ask a parent or guardian to borrow their credit card.
The first thing you need to do is pay for a host and for this, I'd really recommend Bluehost.
They make your site incredibly fast – and they're also incredibly cheap. In fact, if you sign up with our exclusive link, you'll lock in your hosting fees at less than $3 per month – plus you'll get a free domain name!
And you don't even need any tech knowledge to get started – once you get your host sorted, your site will be up and running in less than 20 minutes!
6. Create printables
Printables are a great way to make money, no matter your age, especially as all you really need in order to do this is to know how to use free (yet incredibly powerful) tools like Canva.
And you can sell basically any type of printable that interests you. Printables relating to school are always popular, such as cute homework trackers, schedule templates or even pages for your binder that make taking notes just a little bit more interesting.
You can also look into selling printables that have nothing to do with school, such as trackers for saving money, seeing how much you spend and budget templates.
And just to prove how easy it is to make money as a 13 year old in this way, check out this six year old who made more than $80 selling her very own printables.
To make sure you start earning money as quickly as possible, it's always good to learn from the pros. This is why I really recommend Tracie Fobes' Easy Printables course, whose made tens of thousands of dollars from selling printables herself.
It's incredibly cheap, at only $29, and covers everything you need to know including:
- Exactly how to use free tools like Canva to design eye-catching, polished printables
- The design tips and tricks that actually work to get people to pay for your products
- How to get people to actually see (and buy!) what you're selling
Find out more about Tracie's Easy Printables course here.
7. Design t-shirts
Tons of people have made thousands of dollars designing t-shirts and there's no reason why you can't do the same.
In particular, sites like Printify make it super simple. Literally all you have to do is create your design and upload it to the site.
From there, customers can choose to buy your design on anything from t-shirts to bags to phone cases. You don't have to do anything though, as Printify will create the product and send it to your customer. And before you know it, the money will be in your account!

8. Sell your things
You're almost certainly going to need a parent or guardian's permission for this one given that they may have bought your things for you, but a great way to make some cash (especially if you need money desperately) is to sell anything you don't need any more.
This could include things like:
- Sports equipment you've outgrown or no longer use
- Video games you're done with
- Collectibles like baseball cards you're no longer interested in selling (see here for the best places to sell baseball cards)
- Selling clothes on a site where you can make money, like Poshmark or ThredUP.
(And if you do have some clothes to sell – or you want to help your parents or other family members sell their clothes and take a cut for your services – take a look at the benefits of selling on Poshmark vs Mercari vs eBay.)
9. Self-publish your own books
If you like to write, self publishing your own books is a great way for a 13 year old to make money online from this. There are even people who make $10,000 a month or more from this as a side hustle.
Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing is easily the best way to do this. Once you've written your book, it takes five minutes for it to be published, where you'll immediately have access to Amazon's millions of customers.
You also get to set the price of your book and you keep up to 70% of your sales.
Click to find out more about self publishing your ebook through Amazon.
10. Start a YouTube channel
Starting a YouTube channel is absolutely a way how you can make money as a 13 year old online. Just ask EvanTubeHD, who at 13 years old supposedly makes more than $1.3 million per year from his YouTube channel.
It's worth keeping in mind that you won't make this kind of money on the day you launch your channel. But if you work at it to build up your audience, you can definitely make money by doing this by getting paid to advertise for companies through promoting their products and services.
This video is a great step-by-step introduction on how you can start your own YouTube channel.
11. Online tutoring
Tutoring kids online is another good option for you to make money as a 13 year old, especially if you're pretty good at certain subjects.
Many parents are happy to have someone a year or so older than their own kids teaching them subjects that their kids may not be doing so well in. After all, you probably did the same subjects yourself in the last couple of years at school.
Most of the websites that list online tutoring jobs won't let you register as a 13 year old, but you can certainly offer this outside of these kinds of platforms simply by using Skype.
(I'd recommend you get an adult to help you set it up though, to make sure that it's legit and that you're able to get paid for your work, including to help you figure out how much you should charge for tutoring.)
12. Be a social media assistant
You may not think working on social media is something available to you as a 13 year old, but that couldn't be further from the truth, as it can actually be a really lucrative online job for teens.
This is particularly the case for local businesses in your area that may be fairly small so don't bother to pay for a full social media team. At the same time, they probably recognize that they need help establishing their social media presence – and that's where you come in.
By offering your services to help local businesses set up and boost their social media profile, you'll be able to make some great money doing something that's actually probably super easy for you but almost impossible for those who are paying you for it.
For example, you may already know how to make money on Snapchat – while they may not even know what Snapchat is. You could also get some inspiration for the various ways to make money on Pinterest and offer services relating to that platform, like pin design.
A good way to start is by directly approaching businesses in person with a flyer setting out your services and expertise, although posting in local Facebook groups can also be a good strategy.

13. Design websites
If you have any sort of coding knowledge, designing websites can be a really good way for teens to make some extra money.
As one idea, you could offer your services doing custom designs. While this does generally take more time, you're also able to ask for more money when doing custom work.
An alternative, however, is to create templates and make them available on site like Etsy. Website owners can then download these and have their own sites ready to go, meaning you can continue to earn money from these downloads with very minimal ongoing work on your part.
This means that this essentially becomes passive income, making it definitely something you should explore if you have the skills.
14. Sell things you make on Etsy
Etsy isn't only good for selling digital products, as there are plenty of other physical things to make and sell on there. In fact, given how many people make money on Etsy, there's almost certainly an opportunity for you to do the same.
And as you'll see if you search Etsy for about two minutes, you can sell almost anything you can think of. Whether you're good at making jewellery, home decor or even things like invitations if you're good at calligraphy, there's a market on there for you.
You could even take advantage of the time you have off from school around the holidays and combine it with the fact that this is often the period when Etsy sales go through the roof. Think of all the Christmas crafts you could sell, for example.
You're also able to use Etsy if you're 13 years old, although given you're under 18, the Terms of Use say that your account will have to be owned by your parent or guardian.

15. Freelance writing
Freelance writing involves writing articles and other content for websites. The best part about this being a way for how to make money as a 13 year old online is that you don't actually have to be an expert in the topic you're writing about. Simply do your research, produce an article and wait to get paid!
Most websites for freelance writers don't have an age limit, so it generally won't be an issue if you're doing this as a 13 year old.
You could start by taking a look at Helium, which specifically allows writers aged 13 and up.
16. Review music
As you probably spend a bit of your time listening to music anyway, why not turn it into a way to make money!
Slice the Pie is a website where you can get paid to listen to and give your comments on various genres of music. Some of them will be normal songs, but you'll also find yourself reviewing things like advertisements or even just samples of songs.
Your comments will then be used by people like music producers and marketing companies, meaning you're literally shaping the music industry – and getting paid for it! And how it works is that the more music you review, the higher your own personal rating will be and the more you'll earn.
The website itself isn't 100% clear on their minimum age, but other sources online indicate that it's 13 years old – so you should be good to go.
17. Voiceover artist
Doing voiceover work definitely isn't limited to adults, as you'll know from watching literally any cartoon or advertisement that involves a non-adult voice.
And this is a particularly good way for you to make money if you think you may be interested in going into an entertainment- or marketing-related job in future, as this will be great experience.
One way to work as a voiceover artist is to register with a site that offers voice jobs to work from home, which connect voice actors and potential clients who may want to use their talent.
Through this site, you can get voiceover work in almost any type of media, including podcasts, video games and advertisements on TV and radio. Your rates will vary depending on how much work is involved and, of course, the budget of the client.
You only have to be 13 years old to register with some of these, including legit ones like Voices.com, although this is on the understanding that your parents or guardian will be in control of the account and agrees to monitor your activity to make sure you stay safe.

18. Sell food and drinks
A lemonade stand is definitely a legit way to make money as a kid – although, of course, you don't have to limit yourself to lemonade.
In fact, depending on the season, almost any type of food or drink is going to sell well. You could even find a local farmers market or something similar and see if you're able to set up a stall there.
The key here is to find somewhere with a lot of foot traffic, so find somewhere in your local area that's particularly busy on, say, Saturday or Sunday morning and wait for the cash to roll in.
(Just be aware of some of the regulations that apply to selling food so this doesn't accidentally turn into an illegal side hustle.)
19. Rent out your stuff
If you're not keen on selling your stuff but you do have some things you don't use all the time, why not look into renting them out to make some cash?
Sites like Buro make it incredibly easy to do this, especially for renting out things like sports equipment or items relating to other hobbies, like photography.
All you have to do is create a listing and people in your area will then be able to find you. Just make sure you (and your parents) are happy with the insurance coverage offered, just in case something goes wrong. Otherwise, once you agree on the length of time and price at which the person will rent your stuff from you, you'll be good to go.

20. Sell things at school
You've probably seen people selling things at school for various charitable purposes, but there's no reason why you can't do the same to make some money for yourself.
It can be particularly lucrative to do this based on any upcoming holidays, like selling chocolates around Valentine's Day and Easter or candy canes around Christmas.
You could also sell things that people need throughout the year, like stationery or gum. As an extra tip, try to find things you can buy in bulk, so your profit per item is as high as possible.

21. Flip items
Flipping items refers to when you sell something for a higher price than what you bought it for, like people who make a ton of money flipping furniture and similar things. But you may wonder how could a 13 year old make money in this way, given that you may not have any cash yourself to buy the first item.
However, you can actually start off by getting something for free and then build your way up from there.
That is, plenty of people advertise things to give away on sites like Craigslist. The trick here is to find something being given away that you know you can sell for at least a few dollars. From there, you can use the money you make from that first item to buy something worth slightly more, you can then flip for an even higher price.
22. Do chores
This one may not be overly creative, but that's because it works.
That is, agreeing to do a list of chores or other odd jobs that you'll then be paid for is probably the classic way that a 13 year old can make money at home.
You can generally do this in two ways: either you'll be paid a lump sum for doing a full list of chores every week or there could be a set price per chore and you're paid based on how many of them you do.
If you're negotiating this with your parents, it's a good idea to focus on those tasks that you know they don't like doing or don't have the time to do themselves, like the weekend jobs they always talk about having to do around the house. That way, they may be more willing to pay you to do it for them.
23. Babysit your siblings
Babysitting at home is definitely a good way to make money as a 13 year old, especially if you have younger siblings, but it can also work if you have other young relatives nearby.
Ideally, you'd come to an agreement that this would be done on a regular basis, like every Friday night. By doing that, you're setting yourself up to have a regular source of income every single week.
24. Hold a garage sale (and take a commission)
If you have a garage or basement full of stuff that your parents have been talking about getting rid of for years, why not use this to your advantage to make money at 13?
Specifically, you could offer to hold a garage sale to sell all this unused stuff, on the basis that you'll take a percentage of the sales as your payment for organizing the whole thing.
You may have to negotiate the exact percentage with your parents, but depending on how desperate they are to get rid of these things, you could make really good money doing this.

25. Help your parent/guardian with their at-home business
If your parent or guardian works from home, you can use this to your advantage to make some money this way as well.
In particular, you should aim to take some tasks off their hands that you know take time but not too much specialized knowledge. This includes things like scanning and filing documents, printing things, putting letters into envelopes and addressing them and more.
Essentially, anything of an administrative nature that you've heard them complaining takes too much time is something you could easily get paid to do for them as an under the table job.
26. Babysitting
Babysitting kids in your local area has long been a great way for how could a 13 year old make money. In particular, this is one of the best after school jobs for 13 year olds that pay particularly, as the kids you're babysitting don't need to be looked after until both you and they finish school.
Word-of-mouth is usually best for things like this, so see if you have any family friends who can spread the word about how great you are at babysitting. This could include getting them to post about you and the services you're offering on a local Facebook group, to help you expand your list of clients.
27. Dog walker
People are willing to pay good money to make sure their dogs are looked after, and this includes paying people to walk their dogs when they may not have the time to do it themselves.
And that's where you come in! By offering your services as an after-school dog walker, you'll be able to get paid to walk and get paid to hang out with dogs, which is definitely a win-win.
The trick here is to set up some regular appointments with your clients. If you agree, for example, to walk into their dogs two or three afternoons a week, you'll be making sure that you're earning regular money from this without having to constantly chase for new clients.
28. Pet sitting
Similar to dog walking, after school pet sitting can be a big business. It's also one of the easiest jobs on this list, as all you really have to do is hang out with and give attention to the dogs you're watching. This means that you can make money from doing things like your homework at the same time.
This is also a great way to make money as a 13 year old as a weekend job, especially if you know that any dog owners in your area are going on vacation. You'll be surprised at how much people pay for this too, so even being paid to pet sit just a couple of dogs may make you more money than you expected.
29. Tutor
I mentioned online tutoring before, but in-person tutoring is also a good way to make money as a 13 year old.
Parents are often more than willing to pay for their kids to get tutored by a 13 year old, as the kids will presumably be a couple of years younger than you and so are covering coursework that you yourself did pretty recently.
One strategy to get your foot in the door is to tell the teachers at your school that you're interested in any tutoring work that's available. They'll then be able to tell any parents that approach them that you're available to help improve their kids' knowledge in that subject.
Only go to people's houses to do this if your parent or guardian give their approval. Otherwise, you can usually tutor students at school, either in the school library or an unused classroom.
30. Wash cars
Car washing is one of those tasks that every car owner knows they should be doing but generally doesn't do enough.
And that's exactly why you can use this to your advantage. By offering to wash cars, ideally on a regular basis, you'll be able to get paid to do something that's not overly difficult to do, but that will be very appreciated by each car owner.
And by setting this up so that you're washing each car once a week or so, you'll be able to make sure that you're getting paid every single week, rather than simply doing this as a one off task.
31. Clean out garages or basements
Almost everyone has a garage full of dusty boxes that they'll get to "one day". And yet, unsurprisingly, that day almost never comes, meaning people often become more and more desperate to pay someone to deal with this problem for them.
Which is exactly why you can use this to get paid, especially if you're looking for a job where you can work alone. By offering to clean these out, you can do things like sorting out boxes, rearranging these in a neater and more logical way, helping to decide which things can be thrown out as well as simply sweeping and de-cobwebbing these rooms.
You could even combine this with flipping if you're feeling particularly entrepreneurial and want to get serious money at 13. That is, if you find anything in these rooms that looks like it's unused but that you think you may be able to resell for some cash, offer to take it off the owner's hands as an extra boost to your earnings.
32. Yardwork
Getting paid to work in other people's yards may be hard work, but it also pays well given that it falls firmly into the category of "things most people don't want to do themselves".
You could agree to do a regular task, like mowing your clients' lawns every Saturday afternoon as a really strategic way to make money as a 13 year old. Alternatively, you can get paid to do one-off projects, like helping people with their landscaping when laying out their new garden or even helping to set stones in a new path or lay new grass.
This is going to be a more viable option if you live somewhere with a lot of houses that have yards compared to somewhere that's more apartment-heavy. But if you do think it's a possibility in your area, consider starting with a letterbox drop of flyers setting out your services and your fees.
33. Painting
Helping people to do their painting jobs can make you some serious money, given how long it takes to complete most paint jobs.
Whether it's someone's fence, the outside walls of their house or some rooms inside, getting paid to help out with this can be very lucrative. That said, make sure you know how long the job will take though to ensure you're being paid fairly, especially if it's expected that the task will take a few days to do.
(And if you are hired to help with an indoor paint job, make sure your parents or guardians are ok with it and know where you'll be before you start heading into random strangers' houses.)
34. Run errands
Running errands is a bit of a catch all phrase for the fact that you can get paid to do literally anything for other people.
For example, someone who is short on time or physically not able to go themselves may be willing to pay you to pick up the groceries or other things, like dry cleaning. Local businesses can also pay you for doing things like this, such as hand delivering documents.
The best way for you to go here is to charge per errand. That said, if you think that your task is going to take longer than usual or may involve a few trips so that you can carry everything, feel free to ask for more money as it's probably deserved.
35. Referee/umpire at youth sports games
If you've played any local sports teams in the past, a good idea can be to ask at your club as to whether there are any refereeing or umpiring opportunities available.
Youth games are usually held on weekends and always need someone who's reliably available to referee their matches each week. This is why many clubs are often keen to hire current or former members, as they presumably already know you're reliable and are keen to pay you for it.
A similar option is to ask if any of the younger teams need an assistant coach. The main coach usually has to be an adult, given that they're looking after children, but assistant coaching roles don't necessarily have to go to adults, making it the perfect opportunity for you.
36. Deliver newspapers
Delivering newspapers is an easy before or after school job for 13 year olds that pays, as it basically involves walking or bike riding around your local neighbourhood every morning or afternoon.
It's particularly good for anyone looking for a reliable way to make money, as you'll definitely need you to work a few days a week at least. This makes it an excellent chance to earn some regular income.
37. Golf caddy
While golf clubs themselves can't hire you when you're 13, individuals can pay you directly to work as a golf caddy for them.
This involves you helping to carry clubs, switch out clubs as the player needs them and also do things like provide water and snacks. It obviously helps if you have some knowledge of golf, although that's not required.
This is pretty easy work, as long as you're okay with walking around in the sun. Otherwise, you're locking yourself into a few hours on the weekend usually, where you'll get to walk around a beautiful golf course and get paid for it – not terrible.
38. Collect golf balls
Similar to being a caddy, some golf courses will pay people who collect and return their golf balls.
This will also involve quite a bit of walking around golf courses, with the main downside being that you're not necessarily guaranteed to make any money if you don't find any golf balls. However, that's pretty rare given how many shots go wide and players usually can't be bothered going to fetch their own golf balls that have ended up who-knows-where.
One trick here is to make sure you go golf ball hunting immediately after popular golfing days, such as on Saturday afternoons. That way, you're giving yourself the best chance possible to find as many golf balls as you can – and to get paid for it.
39. Shoveling snow
Some people hate shovelling snow and other people simply can't do it because of how hard it is on your back.
Whatever their reason, this presents a great money making opportunity for you, especially if you're looking to make quick cash for the holidays. By offering to shovel snow and making yourself available as soon as the first flakes start to fall, people will be more than willing to pay for your services.
It's important here to make sure that you make people aware of what you're offering just before the first snow falls in your area. If they only hear about you after the snow is falling, someone will probably have gotten in before you and it will be too late.
This means that you should consider doing a letterbox drop of flyers with your information in your local area a couple of weeks before the first snow forecast. You could also post on local Facebook groups to make sure you're seen by as many potential clients as possible.
40. Raking leaves
While raking leaves isn't quite as backbreaking as shovelling snow, it's also not the most fun activity in the world.
And that's exactly why you can get paid to do it. Similar to shovelling snow, timing is everything here, so make sure you put your name out there just before the leaves start to fall. You could even offer to bring your own rake, by either borrowing it from someone or simply buying a cheap one, as they're pretty reasonably priced.
41. Hanging/removing Christmas lights
Hanging Christmas lights can be pretty difficult for one person to do on their own, so many people are often keen to hire someone to help them do it.
This may involve setting up Christmas displays on the front of peoples houses or even simply helping them to trim the tree inside. Of course, the usual precautions apply if you're planning to go into people's homes.
And similarly, people often need help taking down their decorations at the end of the holiday season. This is why you should also let people know about your services being available on both sides of the holidays, so you can continue to make money both before and after Christmas.
Are there jobs for 13 year olds to make money?
It's pretty rare to find somewhere that's able to hire a 13 year old at a "real" job where you're working for an actual company. This is because most places aren't legally allowed to do this.
There are places that hire at 15 years old, but this is basically the youngest they can go.
There were some specific questions raised on this point though, so you can find the answers to these below.
Also note that even if you can't get hired at a "real" job, you shouldn't see this as a problem! Plenty of the options on this list that we've mentioned can actually pay much more than you'd get at something like a retail job, so don't think that just because they're not a "real job" at a "real employer" that they're not worthwhile.
Can a 13 year old work at Dollar Tree?
Some Dollar Tree locations only hire employees who are at least 18 years old, although others do allow 16 year olds or even those who are younger to be hired, depending on the state's labor laws.
Can a 13 year old work at Walmart?
The minimum hiring age at Walmart is 16 years old, meaning you aren't able to work at Walmart as a 13 year old.
Can a 13 year old work at Petsmart?
Petsmart's hiring policy states that you have to be 18 years old to work there, except in certain states where local laws allow them to hire 16 year olds. However, 13 year olds are not able to work at Petsmart.
Can you work at 13 in the UK?
You can work at 13 years old in the UK by being employed to do light work that's in line with the applicable laws, which includes things like doing a paper route. You can also be employed by your parents to do light gardening or farm work.
This means that, in response to the question of can you get a job at 13 in the UK, the answer is: only in very limited circumstances.
Essentially, you can't go down to your local supermarket and be hired there, but all of the options on this list are on the table for you.
How much should a 13 year old get paid?
The amount you should be paid as a 13 year old will vary depending on the nature of the task. At the very least, check the minimum wage in your area for an idea on your possible hourly rate and then discuss it with the person paying you.
The jobs that a 13 year old will do are generally under the table jobs where you're paid cash on the spot, so you won't strictly be subject to minimum wage requirements.
At the same time, you should be paid what you deserve, no matter your age, so checking the amount that applies where you are can be a good start for figuring out how much you should be paid at 13.
Final thoughts on how to make money as a 13 year old
While a 13 year old may not be able to be hired by "real" employer just yet, this absolutely doesn't mean you can't start earning their own money if you want.
And as should be pretty evident based on this list, there are a ton of different ways that you could make money as a 13 year old. Relying on your skills can really help, so if you have something that you think you're pretty good at, this may be a good way for you to earn even more money.
For example, we mentioned how having some coding experience can mean you're able to sell your own website templates. Alternatively, if you're good at a certain school subject or sport, you could turn these into tutoring and umpiring opportunities.
Whatever your area of interest, starting to work on your money management at 13 years old is an excellent thing to do. You'll be able to begin to get the hang of saving versus spending – something that many adults haven't figured out yet, if we're being honest.
Plus being able to afford whatever it is you're saving for is pretty amazing too!
